Area and perimeter task.

Today we are going to talk about areas and perimeters in the fourth grade primary classroom.

Before to start, I am going to out here a very interesting video about areas and perimeters and other aspects related with maths. This video is an introductory one, in order to help students to remember the aspects and learnings.

Today's class is destined to fourth grade students. They know something about areas and perimeters, but they are not expert and they need extra practice and reinforcement.

This activity will have 3 steps.

1. The teacher will review the concepts already known. In order to reinforce their students knowledge about this topic. They can see in class this video, and the can do some oral activities.

2. The second activity is a Gymkhana, hiding in the classroom and in the hall there will be different plastic sheets with geometric figures.

Such us this, the students in groups have to look around in order to see the plastic sheets and the marker pen.  The activity is simple they have to discover the perimeter and area of each figure.

In that way the can delate things and they can work in the same paper. Once the found all the plastic sheets and the discover both aspects they have to complete this paper sheet.

3. As now they are more experts in the areas and perimeters they have a mission.

The teacher will say to their students that he/ she has bought a house, and he/ she needs to know what is the area and perimeter of each room because he/ she wants to buy the correct furniture.

The students have to discover the area and perimeters of each room of the house.  The faster team will win, but here the main objective is to understand and know how to discover the areas and perimeters.

This activity is totally evaluable through a rubric or through ClassDojo, the teacher can measure the individual and collaborative work of each student.

Also it is a very interesting activity because it involves manipulation, solving problem, visual thinking skill…

To conclude, we can adapt this activity and its difficulty to each level of primary.
