The issue of measure in the school.

Nowadays, we are focusing on the importance of teaching through a manipulative way. Students need to learn things taking into account the reality of shapes, volume, materials… What happens?

In the school there are some unit or topics of learning, for example, this one: the measure, which, can be tough totally by a manipulative way, but, sadly, teachers believe that is better teaching it through the textbook. The reality is that in the school we do not use real measurement instruments, such as; a watch, weighing machine, conveyor…

At the same time, teacher are trying to solve theoretical problems through a theoretical point of view. I mean, students have to solve problems; these problems ca be solve through a manipulative way, but, teacher are not seeing it. When a student read a problem solving, most of them feel blocked by the situation and they are unable to do it.
If the teacher uses real instruments and materials, students will solve it without any problem. Because, this is not logical, if not practical.

One example of this practical application is this sheet:

This activity consist in tell what are the different measures of these objects. First of all, students will feel blocked again because in the sheet does not appear any number. The clue of the activity is develop different strategies in order to finish successfully. I mean, using maths but in a logical way.

Some of the strategies that we can apply are the following:

1. We can introduce Tagram in class, in order to represent the real figures.
2. Doing this activity we are developing logical thinking and creativity.
3. We can use colors to visualize the objects in a better way.
4. Doing this activity we are improving our logical and spatial visual thinking strategy.
5. Also, students can understand that if they divide the objects in a simple way, they will visualize the figures easily.
6. We can develop a collaborative task, in which, students can help between them.
7. Students are working the concept of approximation.
8. Students are working with irregular forms.

To conclude, we can introduce this activity in order to start with the simple logical thinking about measure. Because, we are developing the capacity of reflective thinking of our students.
