Fun facts for children about measurement.

In this new entry I want to show you fun facts about measurement that we can work in class with our students.

First of all, I would like to start showing these video.  Because, students are learning some basic concepts in English, and because they are quite interesting and funny and children can be motivated watching them.

These videos are an example of how we can introduce the concept of length and measurement, after that we can develop a whole project using this chapters and related with physical education.

For example: they can jump and the can measure the distance of their jump.

But, now I want to talk about other aspects that we can teach, as you know young students, and students in general are quite interesting in the learning of interesting facts. We they are listen the explanation of the teacher they remember better the stranger things that the teacher told than the lesson in general.

So, here I am going to put several fun facts that we can use in class. In this way, we are teacher mathematical knowledge and our students are getting cultural aspects.

  • A unit used to measure money is called a unit of account. It is the currency issued by every country.
  • Height can be defined as the distance between the lowest and highest points of a person or an object.
  • The unit of current is Ampere. It is the constant current in a conductor when one coulomb charges flowing in one second.
  • The ancient Roman soldiers marched in paces, which were the length about 5 feet. Today one pace is the length of 2.5 to 3 feet.
  • Candela is the International unit of measuring light intensity. It can be defined as 1/60 of the light radiated from the square centimetre of a black body.
  • Based on the metric system, SI is the system of measurement units in use by scientists all over the world.
  • Calibration can be defined as the process of checking and correcting the way how a measuring instrument works.
  • The means of measuring time on the earth are not metric as our planet revolves around the Sun in 365.25 days and we cannot turn this into a multiple of 10.
  • The smallest unit of distance detectable by the early computer mouse was known as a “mickey”.

  • 360º in a circle originates with the very ancient idea that there are 360 days in a year…which is obviously off by a bit!
  • Roman merchants would measure yards of cloth by using the tip of their noses to the tips of their outstretched arms would be close to 36 inches or 91,44 cm.
  • A woman's size 9 foot measures about 10 inches or 25 cm long.
  • Applets mathematician are interactive programs designed to facilitate the teaching and the learning of mathematics.
  • The Geoplano was invested by the Egyptian mathematician and pedagogy  Galen Gattegno in 1911.
  • We can search that in 1572 it is appreciated the value of the coin.

  • These are examples of interesting facts that we can teach our students, all of them related with maths and with the learning that they have to acquire.
